Just six New York Rangers prospects saw action on Saturday but the best performance of the night didn’t count. Malcom Spence had an NCAA career best three assist night in an exhibition game.
Ty Henricks had a secondary assist as his seventh-ranked Western Michigan Broncos shutout Notre Dame 4-0 in non-conference play. Henricks earned his assist just as he did on Friday evening on an Owen Michaels goal only this one was the Broncos first goal of the game.
The assist came just 1:38 into the game and was all the Broncos needed for their fifth straight win. The sophomore left wing improved his season totals to 7-9-16 as he needs one more goal to tie his total from last year.
E. J. Emery returned to the fourth-ranked North Dakota lineup as they spanked Mercyhurst 6-1 in non-conference play. Emery was scoreless on four shots with a roughing minor as he was on the second defensive pair.
Credit to Emery as he did not have a great World Under-20 tournament to return to the North Dakota lineup overnight. Maybe this will light a fire under him as his talent says he is more than anyone’s seventh defenseman.
Evan Passmore was scoreless as his Barrie Colts dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to the Niagara IceDogs. The Colts blew a 4-1 lead as the IceDogs scored four unanswered goals to earn the win.
Nathan Aspinall was scoreless on five shots as his Flint Firebirds dropped a 2-1 decision to the Brampton Steelheads. Aspinall remains the leading scorer among Rangers prospects and the OHL at 23-29-52.
Rasmus Larsson returned to the Robert Morris lineup as they dropped a 3-1 decision to Sacred Heart in Atlantic Conference play. Larsson was the seventh defenseman and saw his first action since November 22nd.
It was just his sixth game that he has played in this season and he is still looking for his first point of the season.
Exhibition
Malcom Spence and his top-ranked Michigan Wolverines held off the USNTDP Under-18 team 7-5 in an exhibition matchup. A shame for Spence as if the game had counted he would have set an NCAA career best with three assists.
The freshman left wing had the primary assist on Michigan’s first and fourth goals both in the first period. He then added a secondary assist on what proved to be the game winning sixth goal for the Wolverines.
In the counting games, Spence is 7-5-12 so it is a shame that these assists didn’t count.
