Aspinall’s Three Point Night Leads Firebirds

Nathan Aspinall (Flint Firebirds)

With nine of the eleven New York Rangers prospects in action on Saturday evening, it wasn’t the most productive of evenings. Just one prospect Nathan Aspinall was a factor as the prospects saw their teams go 5-3-1 for the evening.

Tonight’s Star Nathan Aspinall Flint Firebirds 2-1-3 +3

So far this season, it has been Nathan Aspinall as the only consistent performer among the prospects and Saturday was no different. The captain of the Flint Firebirds has been the best reason why after the Firebirds 4-3 win over the Guelph Storm have an OHL best eight game winning streak.

Aspinall during this Firebirds winning streak is 8-8-16 and Saturday was the fifth time this season that Aspinall has recorded three or more points in a game. He is after just 20 games played just four goals from tying his career best and barring a season ending injury, just 16 points away from tying his career best.

Against the Storm, Aspinall was a one man wrecking crew as the game’s first star was 2-1-3 +3 on a game high seven shots. Going to let the Firebirds media folks tell his story

With the Birds trailing, 1-0, late in the first, Lombardi found Aspinall streaking through center ice and he carried the puck in with a partial breakaway. Aspinall deked to his backhand, spun and put a shot on net that was turned aside by Zachary Jovanovski, but the rebound bounced back to Aspinall in front of the net. From his knees, Aspinall flicked a wrist shot past Jovanovski’s glove and the game was tied.

Still in the first period as Aspinall earned his second point:

Flint then took the lead after Aspinall circled in the attacking zone, spun and fired a shot that was stopped by Jovanovski. The rebound bounced to the left circle where Podrekar hammered it into the net to put the Birds on top, 2-1.

In the second period, Aspinall scored the game winning goal:

Later, the Firebirds forced a turnover in the attacking zone and Aspinall snagged the puck in front on the net. He pulled the puck from his forehand to his backhand and slid it in, giving the Firebirds a 4-1 lead.

Flint holds off the Storm for their eighth straight win which ties Brampton for the longest OHL winning streak this season. Aspinall improves to a prospect leading 14-17-31 which is ninth in OHL points and tenth in goals scored.

Rest of the Rangers prospects

Evan Passmore was scoreless as his Barrie Colts edged the Niagara IceDogs 4-3 in OHL play. Barrie is 8-0-1-1 in their last ten games as they lead the OHL’s Central Division.

Raoul Boilard was scoreless on five shots as his Shawinigan Cataractes edged the Victoriaville Tigres 2-1 in QMJHL play.  The Cataractes won their third straight game to improve to 12-6-1-2 on the season.

Malcom Spence was scoreless on one shot as his second-ranked Michigan Wolverines spanked Ohio State 8-1 in Big Ten play. Spence missed most of the third period after being called for both a roughing minor and a ten-minute misconduct for “unsportsmanlike conduct”.

Ty Henricks was scoreless as his seventh-ranked Western Michigan Broncos defeated the Omaha Mavericks 4-2 in NCHC play. The Broncos won their fourth straight game to improve to 9-5-0-0.

Sean Barnhill was scoreless as his top-ranked Michigan State Spartans lost 2-1 in overtime to eighth-ranked Wisconsin in Big Ten play. The loss will most likely cost Michigan State their spot at the top of the rankings.

Drew Fortescue saw his 15th-ranked Boston College Eagles shut out 3-0 by the 11th-ranked Maine Black Bears in Hockey East play. Boston College saw their five game winning streak ended as they 7-5-1 (5-3 Hockey East).

Brody Lamb had a secondary assist as his Minnesota Golden Gophers lost to fifth-ranked Penn State in Big Ten play. Lamb is now the leading scorer for Minnesota at 7-6-13.

Rasmus Larsson was scoreless as his Robert Morris Colonials lost to Lindenwood 5-3 in non-conference play. Larsson remains without a point on the season in just five games.
